Iron Lady To Battle Baba Jamal

The Akwatia constituency of the opposition New Patriotic Party is strategizing and putting measures in place to wrestle the seat from the ruling National Democratic Congress in 2016. The topmost strategy is to field the constituency Womens Organizer, Ama Sey, popularly called Iron Lady, as the parliamentary candidate of the party to challenge the incumbent Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Baba Jamal. According to NPP parlance, Akwatia is an orphan constituency without a sitting MP and therefore some potential aspirants have already indicated their interest to contest for the primary though nomination is yet to be opened. The other aspirants include Dr. Kofi Asare, a former MP for Akwatia who lost to the incumbent NDC MP in 2012 polls, Mr. Philip Kofi Ankomah, an electrical engineer and Rev. Osei Bonsu, a businessman. Speaking to The Vintage after declaring to contest for the Akwatia seat, AmaSey, a businesswoman said the constituency seat was a hot one which requires strength, selfless, commitment, dedication and resources to win it. According to her, Akwatia constituency remains the stronghold of the NPP and that there is no time for try your luck, stressing that the party cannot afford to lose the seat in the next general elections. Asked what informed the decision, the constituency Womens Organizer disclosed that she decided to join the race after wide consultation with some political leaders in the area, and the pressure coming from the grass root supporters of the party for her to contest for the seat. She told this paper, My main focus will be to win the seat in 2016 irrespective of my educational background. By the 1992 constitution, I am qualified to contest for an MP in the country. The Parliamentary aspirant was of the view that the party risks losing out in 2016 hence the bold decision adding, I bring unity, team work, dedication and resourcefulness to the campaign team in the constituency. Meanwhile, Dr. Asare who lost out to the current MP is seen as too soft a politician to contest for the Akwatia hot seat once again though the former MP performed very well in terms of provision of development projects. Mr. Ankomah, on the other hand, had contested twice for the Parliamentary primary of the party but the allegation against him is that he always failed to actively get involved in the campaign team of the constituency after losing in the partys contest.
