NPP Congress underway in Tamale

The National Delegates� Congress of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took off in Tamale on Saturday, with delegates trickling in at the Tamale Sports Stadium, the venue, in readiness to cast their ballots. Officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) have been busy since morning positioning ballot boxes and polling booths, whiles security personnel have also been posted at vantage points within and outside the venue to ensure a violent free congress. Mr Bruce Ayisi, Northern Regional Director of the EC told the Ghana News Agency that voting was expected to start at 1500 hours. He indicated that all the requisite voting materials were ready for the exercise and that the EC was almost through with the necessary arrangements to enable voting to take off. He said the EC had deployed 62 officials led by Mr Amadu Sule, Deputy Chairman of the Commission in charge of Operations, adding that the election would be conducted in a transparent and professional manner to the satisfaction of all. Over 5,000 delegates are expected to participate in the voting to elect eight officers out of the 44 aspirants vying for various positions in the keen contest. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, Regional Police Public Relations Officer said the security arrangement was tight to ensure order. He said 400 police personnel had been positioned at the Sports Stadium solely to safeguard the integrity of the voting process as well as protect the ballots boxes. ASP Tetteh said a reserve force of 250 personnel,were on stand-by for rapid deployment in case of any eventuality .
