PPPs Anti-Corruption Demo hits Cape Coast

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) on Saturday embarked on the third in the series of its anti-corruption demonstrations in Cape Coast, with an impressive turn-out by people in the Metropolis. The demonstration dubbed Ebi nom tse yie (some people are living well) started from the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium through the Starlet 91 road, Mfantsipim School Junction, Kotokuraba Market, Coronation Street, London Bridge and ended at the party's regional office at Savoy. Protesters, clad in red attire, held placards some which read Say no to corruption, Kick the criminals out of power, Where the oil money dey?, Scrap Corruption, not single spine, Chop Chop go kill Ghana, Declare your assets, and Cross check litigations before you pay judgment debt The 2012 flag bearer and founder of the party, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, addressing the demonstrators, said the fight against corruption was the responsibility of every citizen, and that even though the PPP was not in government, it would do its best to show to Ghanaians that it was capable of fixing the countrys problems if it should be voted into power. He said the perception that corruption was not a contemporary issue must not be entertained, but Ghanaians should ensure that it was scrapped out of the society, adding that the party will not relent in its efforts to stem corruption. Dr. Nduom advocated for the separation of the office of the Attorney-General from the Ministry of Justice in order to avoid negative influence of partisan politics. He also called for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) so that the electorate would have the opportunity to elect new ones if those chosen performed unsatisfactorily. The Central Regional Chairman of PPP, Mr. Kwame Adu Ansah, said many at times people were voted into power only to pursue their selfish interests, but PPP will not allow individuals to rob citizens of what was rightfully theirs. The National General Secretary of the party, Mr. Kofi Asamoah Siaw, said it was the responsibility of the party, which was the only party that had the interest of the country at heart, to fight against corruption which has made it difficult for citizens to pay school fees and utility bills. He said ruling party Members of Parliaments have become apologies of the President promoting their partys interest, and corruption has become a quarrel between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with the two constantly blaming each other. The National Chairman of the party, Nii Allotey Brew Hammond, asked the youth below 40 years to write an essay on corruption in the country and suggest ways it could be curbed. The winner, he said, would be given GHC200 as cash prize. Mr. William Dowokpor, Convener of the Anti-Corruption Campaign Coalition, and Divine Nkrumah, the National Youth Organizer, took turns to bemoan the state of the nations economy and how corruption has engulfed the country.
