Police Threat To Charge Us Is Very Funny Truth And Accountability Forum

The leadership of the Truth and Accountability Forum (TAF) has described as funny, the threats by the Ghana Police Service that they will be charged for deceit of a public officers and causing financial loss to the Police administration due to the number of people who showed up for their demonstration. It is very, very funny to hear thisand this is the first time I am hearing this. Maybe the Police, they have their own laws but when it comes to our laws in this country, said the Executive Director of TAF, Collins Amoah The group on Thursday embarked on a demonstration in Accra dubbed Yentua Demo to protest the recent tariff increment by the Public Utility and Regulatory Authority (PURC). According to media and Police reports, the demonstration attracted only 25 persons in contrast to the 5,000 persons announced on radio and the number 2,000 which was the official number of expected demonstrators given to the Police. The Police has given indications that the leadership of group will be charged for deceit of a public officers and causing financial loss to the Police administration due to the low turnout of the demonstrators. But in an Eyewitness News on Thursday, Mr. Amoah insisted that the Police has no right to charge them for supposedly causing financial loss to the Service because the Police deal with official things so if I say something on radio and that is not on paper in their office, why should they pick the one on radio and forget the one that Ive written to themthey should spare us some of these comments. He denied the reports saying, we expected about 2,000 people to join us on the demonstration but I can say that we did not meet the target of 2,000 but we had close to about 500 people joining in this demonstration and for that matter, it could be described as a success...Its unfortunate we are having these reports. In a related development, a lawyer, Godwin Adawini described the charge by the Police administration as an extraordinary charge in my opinion. But then when the Police came out and saw that the individuals demonstrating were very few, then they simply had to scale down their numbers.
