Plane Crash: Akufo-Addo Lauds Govt Effort

The New Patriotic Party flag bearer for the 2012 general election, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has lauded government�s effort for inaugurating a five�member committee to investigate the cause of last Saturday night�s plane crash. On Saturday, May 2, 2012, a cargo plane rammed into a passenger bus, killing 10 passengers on board the bus and injured 4 passengers on the plane. A committee was inaugurated to ascertain the cause of the air crash involving the Nigerian carrier. The committee, to be chaired by Captain Alex Grant Sam, has 30 days to submit its report to the Minister of Transport, Mr Collins Dauda, who inaugurated it on Sunday. It has also been tasked to make recommendations to forestall any future occurrences. Nana Akufo Addo expressed satisfaction with the security arrangement at the scene after the accident, and called on all to extend a hand of support and assistance to the bereaved families. Nana Akufo Addo stated these yesterday when he visited the accident scene. The purpose of his visit was to get first-hand information about the accident and to ascertain the level of damage caused. He called on authorities to put in place necessary measures to avoid the occurrence of last Saturday�s plane crash near the El-Walk Sports Stadium in Accra. "It is significant for all Ghanaians, particularly the authorities, Ghana Civil Aviation (GACC) and the Ghana Airport Company (GAC), to use this unfortunate incidence to assess the level of security and safety of the Ghanaian citizen. This will help us to improve upon the existing defence infrastructure,�� he stated. Asked whether the country�s airport ought to be relocated, Nana Akufo Addo said, it was imperative that the government developed ways to ensure that pressure on the Kotoka International Airport (KIC) was minimised, stressing "If 25 million people are calling for expansion of the international airport in other regions, then it must be something that is worth giving attention to,�� he said. Expressing his condolence to the bereaved families, Nana Akufo Addo gave the assurance that the NPP would extend support to the bereaved families.
