The standard of goal scoring in the Premier League has seen a drastic drop in numbers during the past few seasons with an apparent drought by the countrys strikers in recent football matches.
The decline largely confirms the cry of various stakeholders of
the popular sport that the standard of the local game has dropped to
its lowest ebb. According to statistics gathered by GNA Sports from the Premier League Board (PLB), the 2010/2011 season recorded a total of 429
goals, the least during the past four seasons throughout the 240-match
period.
During the 2007/2008 season, 555 goals were scored; 501 in the
2008/2009 season and 484 for the 2009/2010. The figure has thus dropped consistently within the past four seasons, with the signs visible that the impending 2011/2012 season may also be hit by the bug.
It is apparent that with current top scorer Nana Poku of Berekum
Chelsea (16 goals) and other pseudo-goal merchants, Obed Owusu of
Berekum Chelsea, Ahmed Toure of Asante Kotoko amongst others, knocking
at the doors of foreign clubs, the 2011/2012 Premier League looks
certainly to experience a significant slip in goal scoring.
From the statistics, Asante Kotoko scored the highest number of
goals ďż˝ 35 goals with relegated BA Stars having the least goals of 16. The Sunyani-based Club also let in the heaviest flow of goals ďż˝
44 goals whilst 18 goals were conceded by Aduana Stars as the least.
Also of the 240 matches played, 136 ended in victories for the
away teams, 50 for visiting teams and 54 draws.
Meanwhile, the commencement of the 2011/2012 season has been
tentatively fixed for October 9.
