Ghana started the Ecowas Athletics Championship on a bright note sweeping four medals on the opening day of the competition.
Middle distance runner Sampson Azumah led from the start and finished in first position in the boys 1500m race in a time of 3:57:14.
Azumah won the 1500m and the 5000m events at the West Africa Junior Athletics Championship which was staged in April, in Abidjan,Cote D'Ivoire.
His compatriot Atta Gymafi was however beaten to the second position by Nigeria's David Banabas with a last minute surge in the home straight.
Nigeria's Aber Shimbmengey clocked a time of 2:10:51 to beat the Ghanaian duo of Agnes Abu and Rita Luonab in the girls 800m race.
The Championship continues on Sunday, 17th June, 2012.
