The Deputy National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Nixon Hamilton Biney, has said that the frequent road accidents in the country is partly as a result of the increase in fuel prices.
He confidently stated that even though his submission will be weird in the ears of many people it is the truth and he felt same when a professional driver confidently told him, and after thinking through it realized it was a factor.
According to him factors like; reckless driving, overspeeding, lack of street lights, broken down trucks and vehicles on our roads also play a major role aside the high cost of fuel.
He explained that commercial drivers are in a hurry to make the required sales to their car owners, maintain their vehicles and make enough money to cater for their families, as a result their rush lands them into unforeseen accidents.
Chief Biney further explained on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ newspaper discussion segment that there are a lot of factors that cause road accidents, so government should stop looking at a single side and ignoring the others.
He asked authorities to frequently engage drivers on their need to drive carefully and curb the canker.
The largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a matter of urgency is demanding an immediate and drastic reduction of minimum 20% in the pump prices of fuel from the ruling NPP government.
In a statement signed by the National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, he stated that; "the declining prices of crude oil on the international market, coupled with the artificial stability the Ghana cedi appears to be chalking, which is largely due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the injection of the recent $3 billion Eurobond into the economy, should have led to a significant drop in the pump prices of fuel by now."
