The New Patriotic Party “never” promised a lean government during the 2016 electioneering campaign, presidential spokesperson Mustapha Hamid has said.
Mr Hamid’s comments follow criticism by a section of Ghanaians about the large number of ministers and deputy ministers appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to critics, the number of ministers will put a stress on the public purse as Nana Akufo-Addo named 54 deputy ministers for the various ministries on Wednesday March 15.
In an answer to a question posed by Class News at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday 15 March, Mr Hamid said it was better to have a large government with men of integrity who will be efficient on the job than a lean, corrupt government.
“We never promised a lean government. Nowhere did we promise a lean government, because in our view it is not the leanness or bigness of a government that determines its output and its ultimate performance,” Mr Hamid stated.
He justified the size of Nana Akufo-Addo’s government, saying: “We have had, in the history of this country, governments that are smaller that have landed this country in bigger debt and bigger mess than governments that have had bigger ministers. For example, the Kufuor government, apart from this Akufo-Addo government, would have been the government that had the biggest number of ministers and deputy ministers. But everybody knows President Kufuor’s record in this country. Everybody knows what we did for this nation at the end of President Kufour’s government. Those who came subsequently after that and created all the financial mess that we have on our hands which we are still dealing with had a smaller government.
“So I can purport to run a government with 10 ministers and still create an avenue to loot our nation if that is what the Ghanaian people want or to have a government that is bigger than that but which has people of integrity, honesty who are on the job and doing the things that ought to be done.”
The Nana Akufo-Addo-led government has the largest number of ministers and deputy in the country numbering over 100.

Mr Hamid said "it was better to have a large government with men of integrity who will be efficient on the job than a lean, corrupt government" OOOHHHH HAMID, another BABY with a sharp teeth? How could you say a thing like this. Are you sure this is true in the context of Ghana? This is one of the hollowest argument in the history of Ghana. HMMMM, ARE WE SAFE?
A baby with sharp teeth. This ***barred word*** minister will bring the NPP down because he seem to justify every nonesense for his boss Sheikh Akufo Addo. Ghana does not belong to one man or one party and it is obvious the NPP is going down the drain. This information minister will bring sour into the mouth of Ghanaians and receive the wrath of the people just because of the way he talks. No common sense or any sound thinking process. How do you justify that size does not matter? Yes size of government because it cost money to run the affairs of government. How many of these guys do we expect to change the fortunes of Ghana.? Do they even have what it takes to change the fortunes of Ghana? Ghanaian politicians do the same recycling old politics that bedevil the country and plunge it into further poverty.
YES SIR, YES SIR, WE STILL BELIEVE IN YOU BECAUSE EVEN IF WE HAVE NOT PAID OUR BILL AND SCHOOL FESS WE SUPPORT YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE OUR SLAVE MATERS. CARRY ON SIR. NAME MORE MINISTERS . I AM ALSO COMING WITH MY APPLICATION. GHANA DE BEE.
bunch of loose talkers here i see none of u have been able to banter what he said rather u spewing insults, what the difference between 84 plus unknown presidential staffers and aids within ndc time and 110 known on record portfolio appointees.. hypocrites..if u tink u have a broken heart u have the rope waiting for u.... and if u tink u a wiser then get to the ants and get correct wisdom from them...
Ayekoooo, Ghana!
Granted he didn't promise lean government, which of his promises has he redeemed so far to warrant this huge government.
This albino doesn't have a human thinking. He thinks and talks like a pedestrian ffool. Tell him not to ever dare visit any Southern African country else he will be slaughtered and his carcass use for juju money
I "agree'" with Mustapha Hamid. The President didnt promise lean government. Please, advise him to appoint more, more ,more, ,more and more. I hope in your understanding these appoints do not have financial implications for the tax payer, hence being described as LEAN. Politicians insult our intelligence anytime they try to justify and defend the indefensible behaviour. Baaaaaaad Move NPP
If you add the special assistants to the ministers of John Mahama's govt they will be more than Nana's ministers. Those special assistants behave like ministers.....
I always defending the indefensible. ***barred word***!!!
