A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of New Patriotic Party (CYNPP), a pressure group, yesterday waded into the call for the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters register.
According to the group, the current voter register was not credible and could not guarantee a fair and credible general elections next year.
Amidst singing and dancing, the group, numbering about two 200, trooped to the NPPs Headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, to press home their demand for a new electoral register amidst chanting of slogans such as we want a new voters register; we need a credible and fair election next year.
Addressing a news conference later, the spokesman for the group, Dennis Ahmed, said the absence of a new register could be a recipe for disaster in next years elections.
He alleged that the current register was bloated because over 76,000 foreigners allegedly had their names in.
We are calling for a credible Ghanaian voters register now and not an ECOWAS voters register like we have now. A stitch in time saves nine, Mr Ahmed said, adding that the youth would do everything legally possible, including petitioning the United Nations if the need arises, for the EC to compile a new register.
He explained that some well-meaning Ghanaians and organisa-tions such as former Presidents, Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, the Christian Council of Ghana and the Catholic Bishops Conference, had called for a new voters register to ensure a peaceful election next year, and the EC should heed to their advice.
He said they could not fathom why a particular party would oppose the compilation of a new voters register when well-meaning Ghanaians and organisations are stressing the need for a fresh register.
Mr. Ahmed entreated the leadership of the party to continue to push for a new register.
We know the step our leadership is taking, but we are urging them not to compromise on anything except a new credible voters register for Ghanaians in election 2016, he said.
The group commended the presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo Addo for his Rise and Build tour within and outside the country.
We the concerned youth of this great party are solidly behind the flag bearer in his quest to salvage this country from the mismanagement from this inept and incompetent government, he said.
Mr. Ahmed said, we are by this statement re-affirming our resolve to work extra hard for victory come for 2016.
