Kwesi Pratt, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, has backed the court ruling directing the National Media Commission (NMC) to resume the collection of TV licence fees in the country.
Speaking on "Kokrokoo" on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt was of a strong view that TV licence fees can help to revamp the national broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
According to him, despite certain lapses in the administration of GBC, Ghana Television (GTV) to be specific; the TV licence directive is a good initiative.
He however called on the Commission to "extend the TV licence to cover private or independent broadcasters like U TV, TV 3, Metro TV and so forth".
He noted with seriousness that the independent broadcasters are also facing huge challenges and therefore believed a quota of the TV license fees should be doled out to them to also help in their administrations.
"The problems of independent broadcasters are too numerous. If they could get a certain percentage of this money, it would help improve their work,” he added.
He further advised Ghana Television to also put their house in order by rendering better broadcasting services to Ghanaians.
