A renowned diplomat and an elder statesman, K. B Asante, has described raging arguments over whether a Ga is fit or not to partner the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate as nonsense.
The issue of who will partner Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the 2012 elections has generated a lot of anxiety among members of the party.
Some Ga-Dangme personalities like Professor Felix Nii Lantei Odartey Wellington, Professor Ernest Aryeetey and Dr. Nii Okai Hammond have emerged as possible candidates.
A leading member of the NPP, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has however stated that the time for a Ga-Dangme running mate was not rife.
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu had in an earlier interview with Citi News mentioned Professor Mike Ocquaye as a possible candidate if the permutations were right.
But the Enquirer newspaper in its Monday edition quoted the Suame MP as saying no Ga-Dangme was currently fit enough to partner Nana Addo for the 2012 elections.
However, Mr. Asante, who is the immediate past president of the Ga-Dangbe Council rubbished that assertion. According to him, it is sheer backwardness to argue along that line.
The whole idea shows how backward they have gone, he told Citi News. I know some are also saying it should be a Northern partnership and all that nonsense. Are we going forward or backwards?
The party should select the most suitable person the party should select someone who would complement the flagbearer. But the question of the person being a Ga or Dagbani is neither here nor there, the former diplomat added.
