A member of the group, Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (FONKAR), says since President Mills’ only legacy that he can bequeath to the ruling party is success in “cultivating the culture of divisions and factionalism in the NDC”, he should step down and allow Mrs. Rawlings to run unopposed.

Rashid Alhassan believes those calling for party unity should rather be bold and direct their calls to the presidency.

Ahead of the NDC July congress, many party people have called for party unity for the national conquest in 2012. However, Rashid Alhassan, speaking in an interview with Xfm 95.1, blamed President John Mills solely for the divisions within the party, saying he has failed as a party leader.

Juxtaposing the NDC with the NPP, Rashid Alhassan, intimated President Mills has only succeeded in “cultivating the culture of divisions and factionalism in the NDC”. He said this is enough reason for President Mills to step down and allow Mrs Rawlings to run unopposed.

“When the NPP had their congress, we knew people were affiliated to Nana Akufo-Addo, Alan Kyeremanten and the others, but after every congress, anyone who comes out victorious as the flagbearer, it is incumbent on that person to unite all the fronts of the party. This is what President Mills has failed to do. Right from day one, he has succeeded in cultivating the culture of divisions and factionalism in the NDC and that is what he has perpetuated till today”.

“So I will rather advise those who are speaking about party unity to be bold to tell the president, ‘you have failed to unite the party, for the first time in the history of the NDC, we have this unknown factionalism in the NDC, we are never united like before so please step down and allow Nana Konadu to run unopposed”.

Rashid Alhassan also confirmed reports that supporters of Nana Konadu Rawlings are being intimidated, saying, “I am a serious victim”.

According to him, he and people close to him have been receiving calls and threats, warning him against supporting the former First Lady. He however remained adamant, stressing, “some of us would never bow down to any pressure from any quarters”.

He said, “we are working for Nana Konadu, we think she is speaking the truth, the grassroots of the party is rotten and people don’t seem to understand this. People don’t seem to understand that the party has lost 2012 as it stands now; and that serious remedial measures should be taken to salvage the party.”

“So indeed if anyone should say that these intimidations are going on, I can beat my chest out and confess,” he stated.
