The Electoral Commission says it has exceeded its target of registering about 15 million eligible Ghanaians in the ongoing Voter Registration Exercise across the country.

Addressing the media at the 7th Edition of their "Let The Citizen Know" series in Accra Monday morning, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare said at the end of the Phase 5 on Thursday, July 30, the Commission had registered 14,367,906 representing 95.5% of the total projected.

He added that as at Saturday, 1st August, Day 33 out of 38, which marked the beginning of final Phase 6 of the exercise, the Commission had registered a total of 15,117, 438 eligible Ghanaians making it exceed its projected target.

However, he added that the Commission is still open to register any eligible Ghanaian in the remaining days.

He said the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Eastern Regions account for almost 56 percent of the total registered as at the end of Phase 5.

Greater Accra - 3, 129, 473, Ashanti Region - 2, 563, 285, Eastern Region - 1, 366,570 and the Central Region - 1, 330, 353.

Detection of multiple voter registration

The Electoral Commission (EC) last Wednesday said it has detected some multiple registration in the ongoing mass voter registration exercise.

The detection followed the commencement of a deduplication exercise by the commission, a process that involves using machines to match pictures and fingerprints of persons who have registered to detect duplication.

The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quarcoo said the names of persons who would be confirmed to have engaged in multiple registration would be deleted.

When asked what the fate of the culprits would be, he said their names would not be included in the final voters register, meaning such persons would not be able to vote on December 7.

As to whether they would be prosecuted, he said the EC would take a decision on that.

The compilation of a new voters register by the Electoral Commission (EC) commenced on June 30, 2020 across all the districts in the country.

The exercise, which is expected to last for 38 days, is projected to capture the biometric data of about 15 million Ghanaians eligible to vote ahead of the 2020 December 7 general elections.
