The National Cathedral Secretariat has debunked claims by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Rev Eastwood Anaba that there is a lack of transparency and information regarding the ongoing National Cathedral project.
The clergymen resigned from the Cathedral Board of Trustees on Tuesday citing lack of information and a failure to conduct an audit into the project’s expenditure.
However, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, Executive Director of the National Cathedral Project, has clarified that the allegations of halting the audit process are false and reaffirmed the project’s commitment to integrity and transparency.
In a statement issued on Wednesday October 18, 2023 in respond to the allegations, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, pointed out that the claims on the audit process are false.
According to him, the Board had rejected a January 23, 2023 resolution by Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Rev Anaba on the grounds of redundancy and undue politicization of the project.
“The allegations of lack of information and halting the audit process are unfounded. We have diligently kept all Board members, including Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Rev Anaba, updated on the audit progress through regular meetings and documented reports. The audit, conducted by Deloitte, is well underway, and we are cooperating fully to ensure its completion,” Dr. Opoku-Mensah stated.
“Their resolution, calling for a complete cessation of work until after the 2024 elections, was deemed unnecessary as the audit was already on the agenda. Moreover, linking the project to political motives was not in the best interest of the National Cathedral and its objectives,” he added.
“We are aware of efforts to politicize and spread misinformation about the National Cathedral. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to integrity and transparency. The audit findings, which are being carried out by Deloitte, will be shared with the public, demonstrating the project’s genuine intentions.”
Dr. Opoku-Mensah clarified that the engagement letter with Deloitte was signed in March, and the audit process has been progressing as planned.
Meanwhile, the Secretariat also highlighted the politicization attempts surrounding the project and assured the public that the audit findings would be shared with the public, demonstrating the project’s genuine intentions.

@Re@Takum, all these projects you mentioned were indeed national projects. The national cathedral is nana addo's "promise to God" if he won presidential elections and that point should not be lost on anyone. And the president assured it was not going to be funded by taxpayers' money but we all know over 200million cedis of taxpayers money mysteriously got spent on the project and not only that part of the money meant for the project was paid to one rev kusi boateng under dubious circumstances. Unlike the other projects which were completed without brouhaha, one cannot say same about this controversial national cathedral. This is because there was transparency about their source of funding. There is nothing political about what @Takum said. We understand you, @Re@Takum as a party fanatic can never see anything wrong with all the wrongs under this government even though they are so glaring that some members of the governing party have spoken against them. Ghanaians know better than the propaganda you are trying to serve them. And for fanatics like you who think everything must be reduced to a comparison between NDC and NPP, we Ghanaians are tired of these two failures and very soon you will find your smoothness level.
I would like to ask these academics and partisan politicians to stop making such populist assessments when commenting on certain national issues. The construction of the cathedral is not being undertaken in tandem with infrastructural development and social intervention projects elsewhere in Ghana. Anyone who makes comments implying that the current government is embarking on projects without prioritising them is not being fair. When Kwame Nkrumah built the Tema motoway, he was criticised for his misplaced priorities. Today, the motorway is economically viable and Ghanaians are proud of it. Not long ago, when President Kufuor was building the Jubilee House, he was told that the Jubilee House would be used for a poultry farm instead, and what happened when the NDC won the elections?
They always defend, even if it is indefensible! The foundation of this cathedral right from its inception was built on lies, deception ,corruption, embezzlement ,surreptitiousness and underhand dealings! God does not dwell in such a place and won't bless such efforts. So it was a failure from inception. If the men of God are "lying" where then is the audit report? Now he has come out to say there is an on-going audit! That some board members are not aware of the so-called "on-going" audit questions the integrity and validity of that audit. Who approved this so-called ongoing audit such that some board members are not aware of it? It was surreptitiously approved by the akyem caucus on the blind side of the other members?
