The Ghana Education Service has directed striking teachers to return to the classroom as the government has taken steps to settle their legacy arrears.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' program, Director General for Ghana Education Service, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwah explained that they were surprised to hear from the teacher unions that they have declared a nationwide strike when they were in talks with them over their legacy arrears.
"It is just a total of 1,847 who are left to be paid which government is investigating, because the government had already paid 87,776 teachers their legacy arrears.
"So the list which was presented by the teacher unions was a fresh one that the government needed to verify before initiating payment," he said.
He added that there were also disparities in the names that were presented, "so we were checking all these when the teachers declared their strike."
He added that the government will soon make the list of settled arrears public, but in the meantime, they should return to the classroom.
Three teacher unions have declared a nationwide strike action over what they described as legacy arrears spanning from 2012 to 2016.
The teacher unions namely; Ghana National Association of Teachers, (GNAT), National Association Of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) say the strike action is effective Monday, 9th December, 2019.
The teacher unions at a press conference on Thursday said their move is to protest their arrears which spanned from 2012 to 2016.
The National President of GNAT, Philippa Larsen said the Controller and Accountant General’s Internal Audit Unit has approved payments three weeks ago.
However, he said the payments have delayed because GES claimed it has detected some discrepancies.
This position by GES, Ms. Larsen noted has forced them to embark on the strike action.

ATK why didnt your usel*ess ndc incompetent party pay them before leaving office? akpatsei you owed them from 2012-2016 and you couldn't pay them and we can't find where the money went to and instead these ndc NAGRAT,GNAT leaders who shamelessly doing the dirty work of their paymasters thought it prudent to go on strike on something g this government is trying to pay off and I wasn't surprised at all about their names nation wreckers who think everything Ghanaian must be destroyed if not ndc is in control but somebody tell them their ndc will never come back to power ! I remember one Komi something also was the president of GNAT during president Kuffuor's time and that guy never appreciated anything that the government did ease of ndc opposed everything in Ghana and the only thing he didn't oppose was food from the Western. Eastern. Ashanti and the BA he enjoyed comfortably food from the market from these areas but hated everything in Ghana because npp was in power finding good things for Ghana. Immediately ndc got power he went to Okudzato Ablakwah's area to compete Ablakwah for that seat which he lost and 2015 too he lost to Ablakwa GOD DON PUNISH HIM never to step foot in our parliament and these people are doing same to Nana but this will never break him down and will never do nothing to him. Their hate will consume them but I pity those who are following these people for their dead political interest! ndc will never taste power again in Ghana! they can strike and stay home forever who cares Ghana will move on! I wish the government will allow them to stay home for the government to make new recruitment, teaching is not like the medical profession you can't replace them. Everyone can be a teacher our unemployed graduates can have orientation during the vacation to replace those striking teachers that's all ! The government need to take bold decisions to let people know they can't mess with you, leniency shouldn't be a weak point! If ndc didn't pay them why do you even waste your time on them to pay them? ndc wrote off that debt so was not in existence why resurrect it to pay them for them to show this gross ingratitude. They don't need to be payed attention let them GO ON STRIKE & STAY HOME FOR GOOD! NONS*ENSE! Aden na nkwase*asem w) Ghana saa!Why do we allow some small group to make as all look uncivil? it's like we don't know what we want and don't know what we doing just because of ndc? abufusem ! LET THEM STAY HOME! please don't beg for their return next time teachers will choose sensible people, people who behave like human beings to lead them .
This action of the teacher unions is not fair, they are not being fair to government, they should not forget they are part of government, government initiated the payment of the areas and had even paid 87,000 teachers out of 120,000, and ges had realized some discrepancies in the process and wants to rectify, then next day strike. These areas spanned way back in 2012 to 2016,and we didn't see any strike from the teacher unions. I wont blame the entire teachers but rather the leadership of the unions, they are not being fair to government, and they are unpatriotic.
PLS PAY THE PEOPLE AND STOP PLENTY TALK. THEY WILL NOT RETURN TO CLASSROOM IF SINCE NPP IS LAIR PARTY. NAPO SAID NPP DID NOT OWED THE TEACHERS HERE WE ARE TODAY.
