Final-year students of Atebubu Senior High School last Friday attacked the Atebubu Police Station with stones and clubs after police personnel arrested five of their colleagues for threatening to vandalise the school’s properties.
In the process, the students injured a police officer on duty, vandalised a police vehicle amidst chanting ‘yeeni abre’, ‘yeeni abre kooo’ and demanded the release of their colleagues.
The five students were arrested by the police for threatening to attack some tutors of the school, who the students alleged, had collected GH¢50 each from about 764 final-year students writing the ongoing WASSCE exams with the promise to allow them to indulge in examination malpractices but failed to honour their promise.
The students narrated that whilst the tutors failed to honour their promise, they rather tightened examination rules. Tutors who refused to be drawn in the malpractice reported the threat of the students to the headmistress, Sophia Aderenyor, who reported the students to the police.
The police then arrested five students for questioning. This action of the police infuriated the students, thereby, triggering the attack.
An officer on duty was hit on the head and rushed to Atebubu Municipal Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged.
The Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kwame Akomeah, confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE on the phone but refused to mention the names of the officer and the five students who were arrested for security reasons.
Efforts to reach the headmistress of the school to confirm or deny the allegation proved futile.

Not just Atebubu! Almost all the schools in the brong Ahafo area. Is a very difficult area to teach as teacher. Teachers who refuse to be part of this are constantly vilified by the students and their complicit teachers. It indeed very sad and worrying to be a teacher in those schools. Is not a secret. They even discuss ot openly in meetings. Ges and local police are aslo complicit. community leaders are made to believe that those teachers are helping the students and those against are against the school and community development. They are also told that every school in Ghana do the same. now we have teachers who have through similar means and through Atebubu college to post diploma now becoming teachers in those schools. These teachers can't teach, they know nothing, so that is the only way they please the students and corrupt headteachers. So sad!!
I ALWAYS SALUTE TECHIMAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, HOW THERE U GO AND COPY OR ENGAGE IN EXAMINATION MALPRACTISES WHEN THE ASSISTANT HEADMASTER OF ACADEMICS WILL TELL YOU, I HAVE CANCELLED MY OWN SPERMS SON'S PAPER (ME ANKASA ME K0TE ANO BA KORAAAA M'ATWA NE PAPER MU)AND U FROM NOWHERE
I can boldly say that has become the order of the day at Atebubu shs, teachers extort monies from this students, allow the to cheat or even solve questions for them to copy, no wander they get sacked when they get admission to tertiary being it poly, university, nursing or teacher training. GES must thoroughly investigate this abuse of examination criminality
This malpractices in Atebubu shs should be investigated and perpetrators brought to book especially teachers who collect monies from students and allow them to cheat. It has become the norm at school such that student misbehave, play truancy. and still thinks they can pass by cheating with the help of some teacher who will collect monies and even solve questions for the at the examination hall. Corrupt teacher at Atebubu shs must be sacked
