BARELY FIVE months after being hit with one of the nation’s worst disaster, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle has now been turned into a dumping site.
DAILY HERITAGE can confirm that the practice has been going on for several months which has produced a strong stench at the station.
Some traders and passengers who spoke to the paper expressed their dissatisfaction about how waste management at the station is being handled.
Maame Afia, a trader, said they had no idea how people started using that place as a dumping site, indicating that they were much surprised to see the refuse there.
“I can’t tell you how it all started. I came here one day and I saw a heap of rubbish there but I thought they were putting it there so that the truck will come for them. It has been some months now and the rubbish keeps growing in size,” she said.
Though she admitted that she dumps refuse there, she nonetheless added that she would not have done if there were no rubbish there.
“I know it is not right to throw rubbish there, but you can’t blame me for throwing rubbish there. It won’t have been a problem if the truck comes frequently to collect.
“The truck comes once a while but it has been a long time since they came around and I don’t understand why they wait till it becomes plenty,” she told the paper.
Also expressing his dissatisfaction, Francis Prah, a passenger, expressed his displeasure about the bad smell emerging from the refuse.
He lamented on the effect of the action on the health of Ghanaians, saying, “apart from the smell that it is generating, it will also have a negative impact on our health.”
“We just experienced a disastrous flood in June, and these are some of the things that causes the flood. We should take a second look at how we handle things.
“The authorities should act fast to avoid any serious disaster in the near future,” he added.
