Eid-ul-Fitr is a celebration by Muslims to break their fast after the period of Ramadan. This is characterized by eating, sharing of food and a lot of merry-making.
Speaking to Dr. Hussein Ibrahim, head of Religious Department and Dean of Students at the Islamic university College, Ghana (IUCG) situated at Adjiriganno, he explained that “Eid” means festival and “Fitr” means breaking fast, so the celebration is to break the fast.
“The assumption is that God has answered the prayers Muslims offered during the period of Ramadan so it is time to celebrate,” he said.
These days some celebrant overeats while go to the extreme, riding dangerously on motorbikes to the extent of hurting themselves and others. He advised that since Islam emphasizes on moderation, Muslim should not overeat during the celebration.
Instead of eating to your full, Dr. Ibrahim suggested that Muslim should go to the orphanages to celebrate with them. On the Eid-ul-Fitr day, Muslims dress in their best clothes including children. Usually, the men sew a three-piece gown (Jelbab) which comes in various shapes with the hat on.
Each Muslim is to do the Zakat of breaking the fast after Ramadan which is mandatory for those who have Zakat of braking the fast is a donation upon breaking the fast for the sake of being rewarded by Allah.
