The fuel shortage that hit the nation recently has compelled the Government to call on the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to take its leading role in the supply of petroleum products.
The Minister of Energy & Petroleum, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who was speaking at the inauguration of a new board for TOR, urged members to resuscitate the non-operational refinery.
See what happened in the last few weeks. It is very clear that the state oil refinery must take the leading role in making sure that it supplies products. That is the objective.
He asked the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to go back to its crucial mandate of refining crude oil to meet current demands of citizens.
The state refinery is heavily-indebted, a situation that has rendered the refinery inefficient.
In his address, the Energy Minister stated: We must get Tema Oil Refinery to work and that is your job. The job of Tema Oil refinery is to refine crude. It is not to operate a crude procurement facility.
Mr Buah denied reports that the refinery had been sold.
According to him, government has reverted to its original strategy for TOR, especially with a new arrangement under which the refinery would have a marketing partnership with PetroSaudi.
