Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr., wants discussions on the reported UK Immigration policy requiring high-risk residents of some countries to deposit 3,000 before entering into the UK to be done devoid of emotions.
According to him, every country has a sovereign right to have an exclusive immigration policy tailored to its interest, and UK is no exception.
I understand the emotions. I understand the sentiments but emotions cannot drive this discussion, he stressed on Peace FMs Kokrokoo.
In Mr. Baakos view, there should be no need for unnecessary noise making with respect to issue, but what the government of Ghana ought to do is engage the UK government to find a common ground on the matter since the world has become a global village.
He cited the case in which Ghana is putting stringent policies in place to prevent illegal small scale miners from China and other countries from coming into Ghana and destroying the countrys environment in the name of mining.
The one-time Journalist of the year made the call following massive public outcry over the announcement of the controversial pilot project where Ghanaians and a few other nationals from Africa and Asia deemed high risk, would be made to pay an equivalent of GHC 9000 in bonds before being issued with a visa.
A statement has, however, been issued by the High Commission to explain that the UK Government announced its intention to consider using of financial bonds as a means of tackling abuse in the immigration system some time ago.
According to the statement, the details of the policy were still being finalized and that Ghana was being considered as a pilot country, along with many other nations.
In the event that the pilot scheme goes ahead, the vast majority of visitors would be processed in the normal way. Only a very small number of the highest risk visitors would be required to pay a bond, and the bond would be refunded once the visitor returns home.
The scheme would be limited to a select group of countries for the pilot only. If the pilot were successful, the full scheme would be rolled-out worldwide, and high-risk visitors of all nationalities would be required to pay a bond the statement said.
