Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has presented a cheque of GH�12,000 to a 14-year-old orphan to enable her undergo surgery at the Korle Bu Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra.
Vivian Asare, a Junior High School student from Kukuom in the Brong Ahafo Region, has a hole-in heart as well as a spinal disorder both of which require surgery.
Touched by her plight, some Newmont employees contributed GH�6,000 and the company matched the employees� contributions to enable Vivian undergo the surgery in May.
At a short ceremony at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Sunyani, Newmont Ahafo Mine�s Communications Manager, Agbeko Azumah, said the gesture was in line with Newmont�s social responsibility objectives hence the decision to match the contribution by the employees.
He said it was the responsibility of society to support the underprivileged and expressed the hope that Vivian would successfully go through the surgery and lead a normal life.
The Methodist Bishop of Sunyani, Right Reverend Kofi Asare-Bediako, thanked Newmont for the kind gesture and appealed for more support for the student.
For her part, an elated Vivian, a JHS 2 student, said she was overwhelmed by Newmont�s intervention.
