Toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was reported to be �clinically dead� last night � as thousands protested against the military�s move to grant itself sweeping powers.
The 84-year-old was convicted of complicity in the slaughter of civilians during the country�s Arab Spring uprisings and sentenced to life. Yesterday he was said to have died as medics rushed him to hospital from prison.
A Cairo news agency reported that �his heart had stopped beating and did not respond to defibrillation�. The deposed tyrant had reportedly been suffering depression as well as shortness of breath and high blood pressure. Security sources at first contradicted media reports, insisting he was �unconscious and on a respirator�.
Angry crowds had gathered in Cairo�s Tahrir Square as the news broke after generals dissolved parliament and claimed legislative power.
