As a nation, we need to rethink the observance of some of our holidays.
As much as practicable, our holidays should be observed on days, instead of dates. This will allow us to fix applicable holidays on Mondays and Fridays.
So Founders' Day, falling on the 4th of August can be observed on the first Monday of August. Kwame Nkrumah's day, falling 21st of September, can be observed on the third Friday or Monday of September. They then become Founders Memorial Weekend, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Weekend etc. The celebration then goes over three days instead of one day.
We also then avoid this situation of a holiday falling in the middle of the week, such as today, which breaks the weekly work cycle, with its effects on productivity.
I hope Parliament can debate this through a private member's bill so we can have some movement on this.

So excited to see this. Exactly what I have been thinking. We need to debate this in Parliament and get it implemented. It really affects productivity.
We had bank holiday some time past, just like it pertains in UK then we changed it. Great suggestions. Parliament should go back to the old law.
Great suggestion!!!. I have shared this view with my work colleagues for several years. It's improper to have a holiday in the middle of the week; Fridays and Mondays are the best if we want high productivity from workers.
Wow Akomea as CEO of STC is talking from corporate governance and productivity point of view. Great idea and wise proposition. No debate required parliament should just fix the dates.in any case most people travel on Fridays for funerals and stuff like that so Friday is already less productive day among the working days of the week. I go for all holidays to be shifted to nearest Friday except the world festive holidays like Easter. Ramadan,Xmas and maybe labour days ,even the labour day can be shifted to nearest Friday. .
Yes, your observation makes a lot of sense. People were at work on Monday, Tuesday , Wednesday only to stop on Thursday because of a one day holiday only to go back to work for one day i.e. Friday and then break for the weekends. Those of us working far away from the regions and districts we hail from sometimes take advantage of these holidays to dash home to fix one or two problems. Bet me, some workers who dashed to their hometowns today may not be at work tomorrow or they may come late, but if the holidays are shifted to Friday's or Monday's one can easily dash home taking advantage of the Saturday and Sunday in addition. Currently the first Friday of December every year is declared national farmers day thus a holiday. Award winning farmers who travel from all over the country to a particular region for the national edition of the farmers day have the whole of the weekend to travel back to their destinations after the event likewise staff of the ministry of food and agriculture. Same can be done to the others. They can however exclude 6 th March i.e. Independence Day.
