Former President John Mahama has said his administration will scrap the luxury vehicle tax introduced by the Akufo-Addo government if it wins election 2020.
Describing the levy as an ill-conceived one, he said its introduction has overburdened the ordinary commercial driver whose vehicle possesses the white number plate.
He argued that the amount of revenue raised as of now is not even enough for the tax to be sustained.
Speaking to some drivers during his road safety tour in Accra on Thursday, Mr. Mahama urged them to exercise restraint as the NDC will not hesitate to abolish the policy.
“Not too long ago, the government introduced the luxury vehicle tax. This tax was not well thought through before it was rolled out. They should have exempted all commercial vehicles. There are commercial vehicles without the yellow plates, but rather white plates yet they carry commercial goods. Once they exceed three litres, they are charged this luxury tax. This has brought untold hardship on some of the drivers especially those who work for the companies and others. ”
“Just recently, I heard that government has only been able to raise GHC 25million from the luxury tax if that is the case, then they should abolish it. If they don’t, we the NDC government will abolish it when we come into power.”, he added.

My vote for you. What is wrong if Mahama promises to do good what is wrong. If NPP scraps this tax before election is a vindication of wickedness. Why tax at the point of entry and tax again for using the same thing.

I don't actually like the luxury tax, but when I hear the ABOLISHING Party in matters of this nature, I know they have never before had any original ideas of their own. By this time in 2015 (a year ahead of the 2016 election), we knew clearly the policy positions of the NPP on education, agric, health, etc. We're in 2019 and the NDC has had no policy initiative proposed to the Ghanaian voter yet! Is the NDC really a development focused party? Edien asem koraa ni? Is it by force to have a political party?
Ahhhhhh, we have not forgotten your one-time-premium promise. Neither did you not fulfill the promise, you came to COLLAPSE the entire scheme! Mr, INCOMPETENT ONE. Do not just say anything for vote, we know you are EVIL & WICKED CORRUPT leader. If Ghana allows you to come again, the mess will be unprecedented! The stealing will be left, right and center!
LIP SERVICE WHICH CAN ONLY BOUGHT BY NDC AND NOT GHANAIANS. EGYA MAHAMA, WE KNOW YOU VERY WELL KWATSIRKWA. NO HOPE
THE NDC HAS NOTHING MEANINGFUL FOR GHANAIANS.THEY DON'T HAVE ANY VISION FOR GHANAIANS.IS THIS THE MAN THE NDC WANTS AS PRESIDENT? HIS VISION, TO ABOLISH LUXURY CAR TAX? HOW MANY OF THE POPULATION OF OVER 30 MILLION HAVE LUXURY CARS IN GHANA? LETS SAY A MILLION PEOPLE HAVE LUXURY CARS IN GHANA OKAY, LET THE MILLION PEOPLE WITH LUXURY CARS VOTE FOR MAHAMA'S LUXURY CARS POLICY AND I BET THE NDC EVIL PARTY WILL NEVER WIN.
